The Story: Deep in the Romanian forest, a team of scientists stumbles upon the ruins of a 13th century Abbey. On further inspection, they make a startling discovery - the Abbey is built over the entrance to a giant underground cave system. Local biologists belive the cave could be home to an undiscovered eco-system, so they hire a group of American cave-explorers to help them investigate its depths.

Jack (Cole Hauser) and his brother Tyler (Eddie Cibrian) are thrill-seeking professional cave explorers who run a team of the top divers in the world. They arrive in Romania with all the latest equipment, including a new type of scuba tank allowing a diver to remain submerged for up to 24 hours. The crack unit, which also includes Charlie (Piper Perabo) and Buchanan (Morris Chestnut), immediately begin their exploration. But what they find deep inside the caves is not just a new eco-system, but an entirely new species altogether...

The Truth Machine

Lions Gate Film has optioned James Halperin's sci-fi thriller The Truth Machine and set it up with Ithaka Entertainment's Andrew Weiner and Braxton Pope along with Fritz Manger and Bill McDonald (Rome).

Ron Shusett (co-creator of the "Alien" franchise) and George Lee Marshall (Dark Side) will adapt the novel.

The Truth Machine examines what the world would be like after the construction of a perfect lie detector, with the character who invented the machine committing a crime and then submitting to his own creation.

Shoot 'Em Up

Paul Giamatti and Monica Bellucci are in talks to join Clive Owen in New Line Cinema's Shoot 'Em Up, a hard-core action project from screenwriter-director Michael Davis. Don Murphy, Susan Montford and Rick Benattar are producing.

The Hollywood Reporter says the story begins with a woman having a baby during a shootout. The man who delivers the baby, called simply Mr. Smith (Owen), is entrusted with protecting it from an army of gunmen.

Giamatti would play the villain who wants the baby dead, and Bellucci would be Owen's love interest.

A January start date is being eyed. Jeff Katz and Cale Boyter are overseeing for the studio.

Invasion

The Hollywood Reporter says Daniel Craig (Layer Cake, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) will star opposite Nicole Kidman in Warner Bros. Pictures' Invasion, directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel.

Produced by Joel Silver ("The Matrix" trilogy), the sci-fi thriller tells the story of a mysterious epidemic that alters the behavior of human beings. When a Washington D.C. psychiatrist (Kidman) discovers the epidemic's origins are extraterrestrial, she must fight to protect her son, who may hold the key to stopping an imminent invasion.

Craig plays Kidman's colleague and love interest who teams up with her to fight the invasion.

The screenplay is by David Kajganich (Monkey's Paw).

Rififi

Stone Village Pictures has acquired remake rights to the 1955 French heist classic Rififi and will make a contemporized version starring Al Pacino and directed by Harold Becker.

The original film was directed by Jules Dassin and revolved around a career thief who, upon leaving prison, discovers his wife has left him. He returns to crime, plotting a daring jewelry store heist.

The film would be the third collaboration between Becker and Pacino, after Sea of Love and City Hall.

Kamikaze Girls

To escape, she loses herself in the dreamy, doll-like fashions of the "Lolita" scene. Her idol is Akinori Isobe, chief designer of Baby, the Stars Shine Bright—her favorite Lolita design hose. She travels all the way to Tokyo to shop at their store.

The Forger

According to Variety, Paramount is making a deal with The Forger, buying Richard D'Ovidio's spec script and setting it up with Lorenzo Di Bonaventura.

Story centers on an imprisoned thief who buys his way out of prison when he learns his estranged son has only a few months to live. But his efforts to make up for lost time with the teen are endangered when a crime boss forces him to do one last job.

Paramount-based di Bonaventura is a producer on the upcoming Four Brothers, starring Mark Wahlberg and Andre Benjamin and directed by John Singleton. He's also a producer on Par and DreamWorks' Transformers and Universal's Doom.

D'Ovidio's scripting credits include Exit Wounds, Thirteen Ghosts and Ace in the Hole.

Dukes of Hazzard

Well we'll put this and a few other movies to rest with this story:
ShowBIZ Data's box office estimates for Friday show that Warner Bros' remake of the popular CBS show The Dukes of Hazzard, starring Johnny Knoxville, Seann William Scott and Jessica Simpson, has scored the top spot with $12.5 million in its opening day on Friday. As the ninth widest release of all time, Dukes has little competition for the top spot this weekend, where it should earn somewhere between $33 and 35 million.

Meanwhile, the studio's indie subdivision Warner Indendent Pictures is close to scoring another coup with its G-rated nature documentary March of the Penguins. It expanded into 1,897 theatres nationwide on Friday, becoming the second widest release for a documentary, and after making roughly $2 million on Friday, its set to become the second highest-grossing documentary after Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 tomorrow.

Neither put much of a damper on New Line's Wedding Crashers, which added another $4.9 million to its box office. That's about a million less than it earned last Friday, and it brings it box office gross to over $133 million.

Of last week's three new movies, Disney's superhero comedy Sky High held up the best, adding another $2.9 million to its take yesterday and Rob Cohen's Stealth held up the worst, making a million less then that on its second Friday. Warner Brothers' romantic comedy Must Love Dogs ended up right inbetween with $2.4 million.

The way things are looking right now, Time Warner will end up with five of the six top movies this weekend. Check back tomorrow for the full weekend box office report.

X-Men 3 & Ghost Rider (updates)

GM! Though it's a slow news weekend, I've dug up a few stories you might enjoy:

Superhero Hype! has received new updates on both Fox's X-Men 3, which just started shooting in Vancouver, and Sony's Ghost Rider, which has completed filming.

In regards to the former, it looks like Cameron Bright (Birth, Godsend) will stars as Leech in the third mutant installment. For more news on the anticipated film, click here.

Also, Ghost Rider writer/director Mark Steven Johnson has continued answering fans' questions about the comic book adaptation on the Superhero Hype! message boards. Here's a clip on the voice you'll hear for Ghost Rider in the movie:

Things are going great on the G.R. front. In fact, today I got to hear the Ghost Rider's voice for the first time!!! My Sound Designer is Dane Davis, who won the Academy Award for The Matrix, and is a true genius when it comes to creating new sounds. To start with, Dane took Nic's reading of all of the Ghost Rider's lines, filtered them through 3 different kinds of animal growls (played backwards, covering three separate frequencies) then played it through a mechanical volumizer, before finally setting the whole thing on fire! It's fantastic. Picture a deep, demonic, mechanical lion's roar and you'll get an idea of what he sounds like. One thing is for sure -- his voice will shake the theatre!

The Ant Boy

According Midway Games, Midway Games Inc. and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announced a multi-territory publishing agreement that grants Midway the rights to publish interactive games for console, handheld and PC platforms based on the upcoming computer animated motion picture The Ant Bully.

“We are very pleased to be partnering with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment to bring The Ant Bully into the interactive space,” said Midway president and chief executive officer David F. Zucker. “Midway is looking forward to publishing great games based on this exciting film property for a younger audience of players.”

“Being a computer animated film, The Ant Bully will be an exciting property to develop as a game,” said Jason Hall, senior vice president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “The Ant Bully is a highly anticipated film and we look forward to working with Midway to create dynamic games based on a movie with mass appeal for young gamers.”

Terminus

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Eric Singer is writing Terminus, a political action movie that Basil Iwanyk's Thunder Road is producing for Warner Bros. Pictures. Set 50 years in the future, Terminus follows a burned-out and disillusioned war correspondent covering an insurgency who finds he can no longer stay objective.

"It deals head on with what some call insurgency, what some call guerilla warfare and what some call freedom fighting," Iwanyk said. "Today's scenarios are completely fluid, but by setting it in the future we can extrapolate how that world would look like. It sounds like it'd be ballsy for a studio, and Warners went for it because they believe in Eric and his take."

Endymion Spring

Warner Bros. Pictures has acquired the soon-to-be published young-adult fantasy manuscript Endymion Spring for Alysia Cotter and her new production banner, Bueller Films.

The Hollywood Reporter says the book is set in present-day Oxford and in 1450s Germany, at the dawn of printing. A young printer's apprentice discovers a mysterious chest with clasps that look like snakes heads -- with fangs that are rumored to be poisoned. When he touches it, the fangs pierce his fingers, drawing blood, and the chest opens. It contains a secret that will endure for more than 500 years until one lonely boy accidentally discovers it, beginning a quest for knowledge and power that puts him and humanity in grave danger.

The book, by Matthew Skelton, is due to be published next year by Penguin in the U.K. and Delacourt in U.S.

Forger

On the Road

Walter Salles (Dark Water) will direct the feature adaptation of the Jack Kerouac classic On the Road, which is being produced by American Zoetrope, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Salles' The Motorcycle Diaries screenwriter Jose Rivera is adapting the book and Rebecca Yeldham, who executive produced "Diaries," will produce.

The 1957 novel, which played a role in giving rise to the Beat movement, is narrated by Kerouac's thinly veiled alter ego Sal Paradise, who gets inspired to hit the road and see America. The story follows his ups and downs as he hitchhikes, hops trains, meets other travelers, struggles for meals and explores the themes of freedom and longing.

Salles' boarding also reteams him with Focus Features and Pathe International, two companies that worked together on the director's award-winning "Diaries" and would jointly control the worldwide distribution rights to "Road."

Casting and production is expected to begin in 2006.

The Retriever

GM! Let's start it off with Vin the man!
The Hollywood Reporter says that Vin Diesel will star in a movie called The Retriever, which features Diesel as a one-man army fighting to save the world from nuclear apocalypse. The film will be funded by Germany's Equity Pictures.

The VinXperience fansite did a bit more research on the project and translated the following plot summary from Equity's website.

A thriller literally made for Vin Diesel, who is supposed to save the entire world from doom in a James Bond manner; at the last moment. The whole world is threatened by an apocalyptic weapon, which originates from the death zone of Tschernobyl, having been left behind after the accident in the power plant. Rebels, having nothing to loose, are now threatening to use it. Pure action and thrills are making 'The Retriever' both a huge cinema action film as well as a success to be in the world-wide DVD box office.

Diesel, whose The Pacifier is one of the biggest hits of the year earning $196.3 million worldwide, can next be seen in Find Me Guilty.

Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang

Living Biblically

Paramount has acquired film rights to A.J. Jacobs' "The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble Quest to Obey the Bible As Literally As Possible" and set it up at Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment, reports Variety.

The book will chronicle and examine a year in which Jacobs, Esquire magazine's editor at large, immerses himself in the rules of the Old and New Testament. Simon & Shuster plans to publish "The Year of Living Biblically" in fall 2006.

Paramount executives on the project are Alli Shearmur, co-president of production, and Pam Abdy, senior VP of production.

Barry Sonnenfeld is also directing Jacobs' most recent book, "The Know-it-all: One Man's Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World," which involves his year of reading the entire Encyclopedia.

The Trespasser

20th Century Fox has hired Haven helmer Frank E. Flowers to adapt and direct an English-language remake of Beto Brant's Brazilian thriller The Trespasser.

According to Variety, the original film, based on the novel by Marcal Aquino, tells the story of two businessmen who hire a hitman to do away with their third partner, only to find themselves being blackmailed by their assassin and losing control of their prized company.

The new version will be set in Miami's ritzy South Beach area.

The Pornographer's Poem

Justin Chatwin (War of the Worlds) is in talks to star in a feature film adaptation of Michael Turner's cult novel The Pornographer's Poem, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Set in Vancouver in the late '70s, "Poem" is a dark coming-of-age comedy that centers on a man who discovers the world of pornography by stumbling upon the making of porn shorts.

Chatwin can be seen in this Friday's The Chumscrubber.

Hoax

Julie Delpy and Hope Davis are joining the ensemble cast of director Lasse Hallstrom's upcoming drama Hoax, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Richard Gere will star in the biopic about Clifford Irving, the man who wrote and sold a bogus biography of Howard Hughes to McGraw-Hill. Alfred Molina and Marcia Gay Harden also will co-star.

Delpy will play Irving's mistress. Davis will play Andrea Tate, an employee at McGraw-Hill.

The film, which is being written by Bill Wheeler, will be distributed by Walt Disney Studios.

Apres Vous

Variety says that Warner Bros. Pictures has acquired remake rights to the French comedy Après Vous, and the studio will craft it as a star vehicle for Billy Crystal, who will produce with Art Linson.

Directed by Pierre Salvadori, the original comedy revolves around a headwaiter of a Paris bistro who happens upon a stranger who is about to commit suicide. After intervening, the waiter befriends the saved man -- who promptly turns the waiter's life upside down.

The film was released in limited theaters on June 3.

Rise (update)

GM! Here's an update on Lucy Liu's newest project:

Fangoria reports that Ghost House Pictures horror-thriller Rise, starring Lucy Liu, has completed filming in Los Angeles. Michael Chiklis, James D'Arcy, Carla Gugino, Robert Forster, Cameron Richardson and Marilyn Manson also star.

Liu will play a reporter who wakes up in a morgue and discovers she's no longer among the living. She vows revenge against the vampires responsible for putting her there and hunts them down one by one.

The magazine talked to writer/director Sebastian Gutierrez about the film. Here's a clip:

Although 'Rise' is clearly rooted in horror, Gutierrez says the film’s vibe is closer to classic film noir. "The story itself is very simple, but it's told in a non-linear fashion," he tells Fango. "And hopefully, it has a very nightmarish and relentless quality. It's very bleak noir, like John Boorman's Point Blank."

The Corpse Bride

Rockdown

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gold Circle Films, the indie production company behind such films as My Big Fat Greek Wedding and White Noise, has paid six figures for a pitch from writer Christian Gudegast and producer Tucker Tooley. Titled Rockdown, the pitch revolves around a new suburban street-fighting subculture known as MMA, Mixed Martial Arts. Rockdown will be helmed by Gudegast in his directorial debut.

The writer of A Man Apart and Mexicali, Gudegast began boxing at age 7 and now calls himself an aficionado of a form of street fighting called grappling. Rockdown will be fully financed by Gold Circle Films, with Tooley and Gold Circle president Paul Brooks serving as producers.

Falling Awake

Warner Bros. Pictures has signed Bob Soderstrom to write the script for Jon Chu's futuristic fantasy, tentatively titled Falling Awake, from reality TV veteran Bruce Nash's production company.

Warners and Nash Entertainment are keeping plot details for the film under wraps.

Chu was hired by Sony to direct a remake of the studio's Bye Bye Birdie, only to be taken off the project last year due to the movie's escalating budget and risky nature.

Blowback

Walt Disney Pictures has bought Blowback, an original action-comedy pitch, from screenwriter Sheldon Turner, with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Ryan Reynolds attached to star. Variety says Turner will write the script.

Johnson was last seen in Be Cool and is toplining Doom, coming to theates on October 21. He is currently shooting Sony's Gridiron Gang.

Reynolds co-starred in Blade: Trinity and The Amityville Horror. He next will be seen in Lions Gate Films' Waiting and New Line Cinema's Just Friends.

Turner will also write the "X-Men" spinoff Magneto and an adaptation of Kim Wozencraft's novel Wanted for Plan B.

Afro Samurai

Samuel L. Jackson is attached to topline and co-produce a live-action feature to be adapted from the Japanese comic franchise Afro Samurai, created by Takashi Okazaki.

Variety says the film is a joint production of Japanese animation studio GDH K.K. Gonzo, Fuji TV and Mosaic Media in Los Angeles. Jackson is already signed to lend his voice to an animated Afro Samurai TV series set to premiere on Spike TV next year.

Afro Samurai is the tale of a black samurai futuristic, yet feudal Japan who is on a mission to avenge the wrongful death of his father. Jackson stars as "Afro," a warrior who travels a solitary path encountering a myriad of enemies, friends and challenges beyond imagination.

Production of the film is set to begin in 2006, with a U.S. release targeted for 2007.

School of Scoundrels

The Weinstein Co.'s Dimension Films has set Billy Bob Thornton and Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) to star in School for Scoundrels, a remake of the 1960 British comedy, reports Variety. Todd Phillips, who wrote the script with Scot Armstrong, will direct.

Phillips and Armstrong, who collaborated on Starsky & Hutch, Old School and Road Trip, have been working for several years to find a contemporary context for the comedy.

In the new version, Heder plays a down-on-his-luck meter reader who enrolls in a confidence-building class so he can win the love of his dream girl. The class turns out to be something quite different once it becomes clear to the young man that his professor (Thornton) has set his sights on the same woman.

The comedy will shoot in New York and L.A. in October for release next spring.

The Flock

Richard Gere has signed on to star in The Flock, a $35 million thriller that will mark the English-language debut of Hong Kong director Andrew Lau (Infernal Affairs).

The Hollywood Reporter says the film follows a hypervigilant federal agent (Gere) who, while training his young female replacement, must track down a missing girl who he is convinced is connected to a paroled sex offender he is investigating.

Hans Bauer and Craig Mitchell wrote the script. Bauer Martinez Distribution is planing to release the film in the fall of 2006.

Gere is in Manhattan shooting The Hoax, in which he plays author Clifford Irving, who sold a bogus biography of Howard Hughes in the 1970s and touched off a media frenzy

The Crow: Wicked Prayer

Invasion

This movie is based on the old movie "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" starry Kevin McCarthy years ago. I liked that version, but now fucking Nicole Kidman will star and I definitely won't go see it!

Production Weekly reports that Nicole Kidman is set to play the lead in Invasion, German director Oliver Hirschbiegel's remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Dave Kajganich's script will center on Kidman's character Carol, who uncovers a conspiracy in a small town where the inhabitant's personalities seem to be changing.

Production begins in October on location in Baltimore.

Kidman has also recently re-confirmed her involvement in Wong Kar-wais upcoming A Lady from Shanghai which will shoot in Russia - most likely St. Petersburg - and elsewhere in the west. The film is set in the 1950s and revolves around a glamorous woman in danger and in love with a spy.

Serenity

Oscar-winning actress Marcia Gay Harden has joined writer/director Paul Weitz's American Dreamz at Universal Pictures. Harden will play the first lady opposite Dennis Quaid's president.

Already cast are Hugh Grant, Richard Dreyfuss, Willem Dafoe and Mandy Moore. Weitz is producing with his brother Chris Weitz and their producing partner Andrew Miano through their Depth of Field production company.

Dafoe will play the role of vice president Sutter in the film, described as a satire of American politics and show business.

Wolf Brother

Variety says Fox 2000 Pictures has signed a deal with Young Guns writer John Fusco to adapt Wolf Brother, the first book in the "Chronicles of Darkness" books by British author Michelle Paver.

The children's book is set 6,000 years ago when evil stalks the land. Only twelve-year-old Torak and his wolf-cub companion can defeat it. Their journey together takes them through deep forests, across giant glaciers, and into dangers they never imagined.

The second book in the series, "Spirit Walker," is due out in the U.K. next month and arrives in the U.S. next year.

Fusco recently penned both the script to DreamWorks' Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron as well as Disney's Hidalgo.

GM! Yes I'm back once again! Had to take a few days off to work on another project I have been busy with. We'll start by bringing a short bit of news about the new film of Haley Joel Osment:

Haley Joel Osment is making a return to movies, taking a starring role in the independent coming-of-age feature Home of the Giants, says The Hollywood Reporter. Rusty Gorman is writing and directing the film.

Set in an Indiana town that lives for basketball, the story follows a teenager (Osment) who idolizes one of the town's basketball stars. The teen and his best pal are befriended by the player, who ends up being anything but the hero they thought he was.

The movie goes into production early next month in North Carolina.

Osment received an Oscar nomination for his performance opposite in The Sixth Sense. He has also starred in Pay It Forward, A.I. Artificial Intelligence and Secondhand Lions.

The Creature from the Black Lagoon

Bloody-Disgusting reports that Ron Howard spoke to CNN about Thursday's Space Shuttle Discovery launch.

Howard also said that his Apolla 13 star Bill Paxton has joined Universal's Creature From the Black Lagoon, a remake of the classic 1954 film.

Howard also said he would like to do another space movie sometime, but says he's done the historial piece and would love to do something action/adventure driven in the vein of 2010.

I saw this movie many years ago....hope they really do something better with it this time.

God of War

Universal Pictures has secured the movie rights to video game God of War, created by Sony Computer Entertainment. Mosaic Media Group's Charles Roven and Alex Gartner will produce the feature adaptation, says Variety.

In the game, players can unleash the power of the Gods and embark on a merciless quest as Kratos, an ex-Spartan warrior driven to destroy Ares, the God of War. Armed with lethal double chainblades, Kratos must carve through mythology’s darkest creatures— including Medusa, Cyclops, the Hydra and more, while solving intricate puzzles in breathtaking environments. Driven by pure revenge, nothing can stop Kratos from achieving absolution.

The game, created by David Jaffe and Shannon Studstill, was released in March. A writer or director has not yet been attached to the project.

New Line has bought the comedy Happy Campers from screenwriters Peter Gaulke and Gerry Swallow (Black Knight), says Variety.

The script is about a mild-mannered accountant who, in order to convince his son that he's tough and cool, agrees to lead a class camping trip.

Tapestry Films' Andrew Panay, Peter Abrams and Robert Levy are producing. The three produced Wedding Crashers, which is turning into a summer sleeper hit for New Line.

People's House

Warner Bros. and Imagine Entertainment are teaming up on The People's House, a Stacy Sherman-scripted comedy about a first couple divorce that puts the White House in play as a marital asset. Variety says Brian Grazer will produce.

In Sherman's script, the president is caught philandering, and the first lady kicks him out of the house and files for divorce. Because the first couple has few personal assets beyond the promise of future riches from memoirs and speaking engagements, she's granted custody of the most famous residence in D.C. The most powerful world leader finds himself sleeping in his childhood bedroom, returning to the Oval Office for only for work.

Sherman has just started a rewrite, and the studio hopes to fast-track the comedy.

Apocalypto

Variety reports that Mel Gibson's Apocalypto will be filmed in an obscure Mayan dialect.

Set 3,000 years ago, the film may feature the same kind of subtitles Gibson reluctantly added to The Passion of The Christ. It will star a neophyte cast indigenous to the region of Mexico where Gibson will shoot in October. And it likely will carry an R rating, unless Gibson tempers the onscreen depiction of violent scenes he wrote in his script.

Walt Disney Pictures will distribute domestically and Gibson's company, Icon, will handle foreign territories. Gibson will produce along with Icon partner Bruce Davey.

Catacombs

Last week at Comic-Con International, during the Lions Gate horror panel, the company's President of Acquisitions Peter Block told us a bit about their upcoming horror thriller Catacombs from the producers of Saw. He whetted our appetite with the film's premise about a woman, played by Shannyn Sossamon, who visits her sister in Paris, and the two of them go to an all-night rave in the Paris catacombs, which just so happens to be filled with dead bodies. Somehow, Shannyn gets lost and…cue incidental music…she may not be alone down there.

This weekend, ComingSoon.net had a chance to talk to the film's co-writer and co-director David Elliot while he was in town promoting the upcoming John Singleton movie Four Brothers, which he wrote with his regular writing partner Paul Lovett. We were rather surprised to learn that Elliot's partner for Catacombs was none other than comic book artist Tomm Coker, and that they had already finished filming it. He told us a bit more about the project and how it came about.

Here's a piece on the new movie Catacombs being made right now:

"Tom is a good friend of ours, and he went to the catacombs in Paris, which is 300 miles of abandoned limestone mines under the city," David told us. "About 200 years ago, there was no room left in the cemeteries, so they dug up every dead body in the city and just threw them in there. So what nobody knows is that right underneath Paris, below the Left Bank, is 6 to 7 million dead bodies, so kids break in there and basically, play around, take flashlights and explore, and recently, people started throwing parties and big raves down there. Tomm and I just sort of did a side project. He's a big comic guy and very talented, so we spent weekends and nights working on the script and then met the guys that produced 'Saw' and they loved the idea. They're a writer/director kind of oriented place, so they gave us the shot to direct it, which was really great. We shot in Romania that was a real joy."

Elliot also told us that Coker had some beautiful storyboards for the film, which they might try to release as a book. "He and I were great collaborators in a sense, because I was just a pure writer at one point and he came from doing pictures, so we had a nice way of communicating visually."

Catacombs will be coming out sometime during the first quarter of 2006, but you can get a taste for Elliot's writing with Four Brothers, which comes out August 12.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (update)

GM! Here's a couple of new pieces of news for you this morning starting with this piece on the new Harry Potter movie coming up:

With every successive "Harry Potter" book, author JK Rowling has introduced new characters, making it more of a challenge for directors when translating them to the big screen, because they have to cast new people to join an ensemble cast who have been living these movies for a number of years. For the fourth movie, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, four more young actors have been brought aboard to join the trio of regulars, Daniel Radcliff, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson.

Last November, ComingSoon.net visited the "Goblet of Fire" set, and we were allowed to give the first interviews to three of the young actors who play Harry's competition in the Tri-Wizard Tournament. Robert Pattinson plays Cedric Diggory, Hogwarts' official entry into the contest, Clémence Poéy plays Fleur Delacour, the candidate of the all-girls' school Beauxbatons, while newcomer Stanislav Ianevski plays Viktor Krum, the Bulgarian Quidditch champion from the Dumstrang school. Since they hadn't talked to the press very much, if at all, at that time, there were all very open to answering questions, even if they all got rather giggly at times. Poéy was only able to join us midway through the interview.

CS!: How does it feel to be the new blood in such a popular series of movies?

Robert Pattinson: Well, I thought it would be more daunting then it has turned out to be. I think I've kind of integrated pretty easily, but everyone's pretty friendly, so it's not particularly difficult to do that. I think being a "new blood" hasn't really affected me that much.

Stanislav Ianevski: I feel as if what I've been doing hasn't really changed me, as well. I feel as if I'm a part of a new family now. I've settled down really well, I think.

CS!: Were you fans of the movies before doing this or had you not paid attention?

Stan: Well, me, personally, not directly, but as soon as I got the part, I got the past books and the films.

Robert: That's more or less the same as me. I hadn't read any of them until I heard about the audition and then I read it about a week before the audition. I was pretty unitiated.

CS!: Stan, this being your first movie ever, what's it like coming onto a set this extravagant for your first experience?

Stan: Well, I didn't exactly know what I was going into, so I think I sort of took it the more relaxed way. Then, as time went by, I started getting amazed myself, thinking of the future in that what we do in that moment, we'll actually be seeing that all over the world on screens next year. It was a little scary feeling as time went by. You try to give your best for the viewers.

CS!: Can you tell us how you got the part of Victor Krum?

Stan: Well, I had only been in little school thing. In Israel, we had little theatre things, but they were minor. I got the part in my current school. We had afternoon registration and I was late, and I was speaking to one of my friends in school, running to sign in at the late afternoon. The casting director was walking by and she heard my voice. She turned around and told the head of drama that she wanted me to come to audition. That's how it started. I went to a lot of auditions and I eventually got to meet Mike and got the part.

CS!: What is Mike Newell like to work as a director? Was he rather paternal to the younger actors?

Robert: Sort of. Everyone says that he's very much of an actors' director and he is quite hands-on. Nothing's kind of theoretical. He'll show you exactly what he wants to do. It's not sort of anything high-flung about it. He won't assume anything to any of the actors. He'll talk to you the same if you're Alan Rickman or if you're an extra. He's a really good director to work with.

Stan: He creates a really strong atmosphere when he's around, and I think it's also really motivating for the actors.

CS!: Of the other actors you've worked with, which of the veterans most impressed you?

Stan: Personally, every single actor on this film has his own strong side, and I've been impressed by everyone, really, but especially Dumbledore, Michael Gambon, and Alan Rickman. The bigger actors seem to be more friendly then I thought they would be, and they really make you feel like you're there to have fun rather than work.

(At this point, actress Clémence Poéy joins the two guys.)

CS!: Since you're just joining us, what's it like being the "new blood" in this movie?

Clémence Poéy: It's been fine really. Everyone's been really friendly. You don't feel like an intruder in a way. You feel really welcomed, and it's a new film each time. We're not the only ones being new.

CS!: How was it shooting the Tri-Wizard scenes?

Robert: The maze right at the beginning was tough, physically demanding stuff. It's me and Stan and Dan doing it for most of the time, and most of the special effects are kind of real. The whole thing was hydraulic, so the maze is crushing and squeezing in on you, and no one knew if you were going to sort of die, because it closed the whole way. It was all pretty exciting stuff. I had never done anything like that before.

Stan: It was the very first thing we were doing, as well, and we had quite a few laughs. We were at some times a bit scared.

CS!: What are some of the things that each of you face during the maze, which is the third task in the Tri-Wizard contest?

Clémence Dangerous things, I guess. We haven't seen it yet.

Robert: What we face? It's kind of nothing in a way. It's different to the book how it's been portrayed in this, quite a lot different. It's like your biggest enemy is yourself and the isolation and fear of what's behind the next corner, of not knowing anything. And the maze itself is alive, rather than being monsters and stuff inside. When you're walking around a corner, you never see anything, but all the competitors go insane, because of the competition and the general fear, like being scared of the dark over a period of time.

CS!: So there won't be any 15-foot tall spiders like in the book?

Robert: No, but it's much scarier. I shouldn't really say that to be controversial.

CS!: What's the coolest scene you've filmed that you're most looking forward to seeing on the big screen?

Robert: I think probably the final sequence of scenes from the end of the maze and the big fight scene finale. That's going to be really, really cool.

Stan: I'm looking forward to the more action scenes as well, especially the one me and Rob filmed right at the beginning where we were fighting in the maze. I remember that very clearly.

CS!: So we know what was the hardest part, but what was the most fun for you to do?

Robert: All the physical things were probably the most fun things, as well. The underwater stuff was really cool, but bizarre. You can't experience that anywhere else. There's nothing in the pool, and that's the scene that I'm most looking forward to seeing because you can't actually see anything. There's nothing to see, so everything is very devoid, the entire environment.

CS!: Can you talk a bit about the underwater training you went through for the second task?

Robert: I did about three weeks training just before the maze and that was the first thing I did for anything. Yeah, and how long did we shoot underwater? It was two months, I think, but I was only there for three weeks. It's pretty strange, because you can't see anything. Everyone's in blue wetsuits and you get something jammed into your mouth. You have a megaphone Tannoy (that's a speaker for you non-Brits) under the water, which tells you "Look more scared" or something. "Stop breathing." (laughter)

CS!: Were any of you certified divers before this and did you know you'd be doing so much swimming before you got the part?

Robert: I wasn't. Just general swimming.

Stan: I wasn't either.

Clémence: Well, I think we got one from the training. It was the first time for me. I had never scubadived before, but I know they made sure I was able to swim when my contract showed up. That was it.

CS!: Which one of you ended up spending the most time underwater?

Robert: I don't know, because [Céleste] had to fight the Grindylow.

Clémence: Yeah, I don't think I was supposed to have that much, and then I got a bit more.

CS!: How is it fighting in a blue screen tank against a non-existent monster?

Clémence: It's pretty scary at first, just because you can't breathe. It's just not natural and you just want to go back to the surface. They keep telling you that you're going to get used to it, and you just stop coming up all the time. You actually spend three hours underwater, which is great by the end of it, because it's really relaxing. It's a very peaceful world.

Robert: And you're not self-conscious at all, because you know that whatever you do, you're going to look like an idiot. (laughter)

CS!: What did you guys have to do underwater?

Robert: I had to kind of look around (laughter) and point and I have to tell Harry to hurry up, so I didn't have a huge amount to do.

Clémence: Did you actually talk?

Robert: No, I didn't really do anything. I just kind of point at my watch. There's so much chlorine in the water, you can't actually see each other, so it took almost the whole day just to get the right angle. You can't get any of the timing right.

CS!: Robert, your character dies in the book, so what was that experience like in the film?

Robert: Well, I haven't actually died "live" yet but I've been dead a few times. It's strange, but it's quite sort of relaxing. You feel like a bit of a therapist, because everyone's giving you all their grief, and you're just lying there listening. Yeah, it was quite nice, like no pressure after a couple weeks. I enjoyed it.

CS!: Of all the costumes you each wear in the movie, which is your favorite?

Clémence: Why I think it's going to be my ball dress. I haven't worn it yet, but I tried it on, and I'm looking forward to wearing it. We'll be shooting that in December, of course, so we'll all be freezing, but it's a very nice dress.

Robert: I think the costume which I have when I'm dead, the funeral costume. And I did request to have an open coffin.

Clémence: And then you attended your own funeral! He came and looked! (laughter)

Robert: I think the torn-up Voldemort blood-stained costume is probably my favorite.

Stan: I quite like my maze costume, as it's the softest one of all. It's made out of cotton and I prefer softer clothes.

CS!: All the clothes you're wearing seems to be kind of heavy, Stan. Aren't you hot all the time?

Stan: I don't prefer much heat on me, but you have to wear it.

Clémence: We can swap if you want. (laughter)

CS!: Are we going to see you playing Quidditch at all in the movie?

Stan: Well, I've tried my broomstick out, and we are going to shoot Quidditch, but that's still to come.

CS!: The fourth book seems to show a lot more of the growing teen's hormones. Did you feel that sort of atmosphere on the set at all?
(All three actors look at each other trying to decide who to answer, before both guys look at Clémence, at which point, they all start laughing.)

Clémence: No, the thing is that I'm always surrounded by fifteen really pretty girls, so when you walk down the set, you've got all of these extras (breathing heavily) because it's a group. I don't think we'd be like that if we're on our own otherwise.

CS!: Robert, can you talk about the celebrity of being the Hogwarts champion and having to compete against the great Harry Potter?

Robert: I suppose it is quite cool, but then again, it is Harry Potter, so you're never going to really compete. During the Great Hall sequence, my entrance is like you hear everyone whispering "It's Cedric..it's Cedric…" That's really quite cool. You get a trip from it.

CS!: How has it been working with Daniel Radcliffe?

Robert: Really good. I've kind of done everything and I've only worked with Dan in almost every single scene, so yeah, I get on with him very well.

Stan: He's a great boy. He's just amazing. There's not much that I can add to that.

Clémence: Me neither.

Robert: He's incredibly hard working, as well.

Clémence: Yeah, he's a true professional.

Stan: He's always friendly and willing to help you.

Robert: He has to go to tutoring at the same time and the immediate switch between going from tutoring to actor all day every day, nearly 365 days a day. I think it's absolutely incredible, and I would never ever be able to do that.

CS!: Have Daniel, Rupert or Emma talked to you about the mad fans you'll be dealing with when the movie comes out or are they trying to keep that from you?

Robert: We kind of briefly met, and I was talking to Dan's dad about his Christmas card to the fans. I think they're printing out 20,000 Christmas cards, just in the first batch, just for his personal fan club. Just the scale of it is incredible. I got fan letters about a week after it was announced that I was cast from people who probably have no idea who I am really. I thought that was really strange.

CS!: What have each of you learned from doing this movie?

Clémence: The most important thing is about acting in front of blue screens. I mean, that's something I've never done before, and acting underwater was quite a new experience, as well.

Robert: Yeah, I suppose the blue screen thing, I guess you can never really get that used to it. I did another movie, which is almost all blue screen, as well, so I had some idea, but not to the extent that it is in this movie. I think the technicalities of things is quite a big thing I've learned.

Stan: Everything that's been done on the film has been pretty much new to me, so I've learned quite a lot.

CS!: You've been working on this movie since April, and you're going to be shooting through March. Do you have anything else lined up for after it's done yet?

Robert: I'm going to start doing castings again in January, since I have a month off and see what happens.

Stan: I've got to see my agent beforehand, but hopefully, there will be things to come.

Clémence: I've got two French movies lined-up actually, one for spring and the other for the summer, so it's going to be very different. Small movies.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire opens on November 18.

Christina Ricci will star in a comedy titled Penelope, to be produced by Reese Witherspoon's Type-A Films and financed by Stone Village Pictures, reports Variety.

The script, a modern-day fable about a woman under a curse who tries to end a lifelong string of bad luck, is the first by Everybody Loves Raymond supervising producer Leslie Caveny. Witherspoon will also play a supporting role.

The film will be helmer Mark Palansky's feature debut. The movie is scheduled to start filming in January, after Ricci wraps Black Snake Moan, in which she stars opposite Samuel L. Jackson for Hustle & Flow direct Craig Brewer.

Now here's an interesting project:

Universal's Focus Features will back the Tim Burton-produced 9, an animated film from director Shane Acker, says Variety.

Based on Acker's short of the same name, surreal fantasy takes place in a parallel world where humanity is threatened. Timur Bekmambetov, Jim Lemley and Dana Ginsburg also produce.

Acker describes his CGI filmas having a "stylized quality" that makes footage look like stop-motion animation. Tim Burton's Corpse Bride writer Pamela Pettler will write the screenplay.

The project marks Focus' first animated feature.

Three for Dupree

Matt Dillon has joined Owen Wilson and Kate Hudson in Universal Pictures' You, Me and Dupree, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The comedy tells the story of a newlywed couple (Hudson, Dillon) whose relationship problems boil over when the groom's unemployed best man, Dupree (Wilson), moves in with them for a brief period and seems to have no intention of leaving.

You, Me and Dupree starts filming in the fall. Joe and Anthony Russo will direct from a screenplay by Mike LeSieur.

Guy Pearce will star in the Houdini drama Death Defying Acts, with Rachel Weisz in talks to co-star as the magician's mistress, reports Variety.

Based on true events during the escape artist Harry Houdini's 1926 tour of Britain, the film follows Houdini's passionate relationship with a woman he encounters in Scotland.

The film will be directed by Gillian Armstrong and was written by Tony Grisoni (Tideland) and Brian Ward (The Interpreter).

Pearce's credits include Memento and L.A. Confidential. Weisz recently starred in Constantine and will appear next in The Fountain.

Death Defying Acts starts shooting in early 2006.

Destroy all Humans

Well it seems the title of this movie gives away the plot!! lol.

According to Reuters, video game maker THQ Inc. has hired United Talent Agency Inc. to spearhead its effort to make a movie based on its recently released Destroy All Humans! title.

In the game, which is rated "T" (Teen 13+), players use destructive weapons and innate mental powers to take on the most feared enemy in the galaxy - Mankind! Gamers control Crypto, an alien warrior sent to Earth to clear the way for the Furon invasion force.

The player's mission is to infiltrate humanity, control them, harvest their brain stems and ultimately destroy them.

THQ said the Hollywood talent agency would guide Destroy All Humans! through its development into major motion picture and television projects. UTA will also oversee financing, production and distribution.

The Covenant

Let's start with this bit of news about another graphic novel being made into a movie (as if we needed one lol) :

Renny Harlin is set to direct an adaptation of the graphic novel The Covenant, by Crossing Jordan writer Aron Coleite and artist Tone Rodriguez, says Production Weekly.

The script, written by J.S. Cardone, follows a group of four families whose patriarchs wield a vast eldritch power. Those powers have been passed down from father to son for generations. The main players in the book are Caleb, Pogue, Reid and Miller. The site says we meet them at the moment when they discover they are next in line to receive the power of the Covenant.

The story begins with the boys learning about the Covenant and how to use their powers. During that summer of fun and experimentation, they unknowingly release an evil out into the world. Four years later, the Covenant has to stop the menace they unleashed.

Production on the film is set to begin the first week of October in Montreal. Top Cow will release the first issue on September 1. The issue can also be read online here.

This movie was written by Jim Jarmusch and stars: Bill Murray, Frances Conroy, Julie Delpy, Jessica Lange, Sharon Stone, Tilda Swinton, and Jeffrey Wright.

The Story: In the new film from acclaimed writer/director Jim Jarmusch, winner of the Grand Prix at the 2005 Cannes International Film Festival, Bill Murray stars as Don Johnston.

The resolutely single Don has just been dumped by his latest lover, Sherry. Don yet again resigns himself to being alone and left to his own devices. Instead, he is compelled to reflect on his past when he receives by mail a mysterious pink letter. It is from an anonymous former lover and informs him that he has a 19-year-old son who may now be looking for his father.

Don is urged to investigate this "mystery" by his closest friend and neighbor, Winston, an amateur sleuth and family man. Hesitant to travel at all, Don nonetheless embarks on a cross-country trek in search of clues from four former flames. Unannounced visits to each of these unique women hold new surprises for Don as he haphazardly confronts both his past and, consequently, his present.

Variety says Vinton Studios is changing its name to Laika Entertainment and is moving into production on its first CG-animated feature, Coraline, to be directed by The Nightmare Before Christmas helmer Henry Selick and produced by former Fox executive Bill Mechanic.

Coraline is based on Neil Gaiman's Hugo Award-winning, best-selling children's book. Coraline is a young bored girl who discovers that bricked-up wall behind a door in her flat leads to another world, with another mother, and another father.

Selick also wrote the film's screenplay.

Born to Rock

Paramount Pictures and MTV Films have optioned the Gordon Korman novel Born to Rock and set brothers Gavin and Greg O'Connor (writers of Disney's Miracle) to develop it under their Solaris banner as a potential directing vehicle for Gavin.

Variety says the comedy revolves around a teenager whose Harvard dreams get dashed when his scholarship is revoked after an ethics scandal.

He discovers that his mysterious biological father is the lead singer of a legendary '80s punk band that's mounting a comeback. The youth becomes a roadie in hopes of prying tuition money from his father after bonding with him.

Hyperion will release the novel next year.

Dungeon Seige (update)

Ray Liotta will play the villain, Gallian, in director Uwe Boll's video game adaptation, Dungeon Siege. He joins Jason Statham, John Rhys-Davies, Matthew Lillar, Leelee Sobieski, Burt Reynolds, Ron Perlman and Kristinna Loken in the film.

The Hollywood Reporter says Will Sanderson, former NFL star Brian J. White and German supermodel Eva Padberg have joined the cast as well.

Dungeon Siege, which is based on Gas Powered Games' million-selling PC game franchise, is filming in and around Vancouver through October 11. The $60 million fantasy film is expected to run three hours.

"The story starts in the same way that the first game begins," producer Shawn Williamson of Brightlight Pictures said. "A peaceful town is attacked by the evil krugs, and a reluctant hero emerges to assist in the defeat of the creatures. He is joined by others along the journey."

"Dungeon Siege II" ships for PC from Microsoft Games Studio on August 16. Boll expects the movie to be ready for distribution by late-summer 2006.

Well Hollywood continues it's neverending quest for unoriginality! So many remakes and not many truely original films anymore. Corporate film making sucks! Here's another example:

20th Century Fox has hired Behind Enemy Lines and Flight of the Phoenix helmer John Moore to direct The Omen 666, reports Variety.

The film is a remake of the 1976 horror classic about the arrival of the Antichrist in the home of an unsuspecting family.

Dan McDermott is writing a script that contemporizes the story. The project is on a fast track, as the studio has set a tentative October 3 start date.

Notorious B.I.G Biopic

Fox Searchlight Pictures is in talks with Training Day helmer Antoine Fuqua to direct a feature on the life and times of late rapper the Notorious B.I.G., aka Biggie Smalls and Christopher Wallace.

According to Variety, the script is being written by Cheo Hodari Coker, a former journalist who also authored the bio "Unbelievable: The Life, Death, and Afterlife of the Notorious B.I.G."

The film is being produced by Wallace's mother, Voletta Wallace, and by his former managers, Wayne Barrow and Mark Pitts.

Wallace was gunned down at the age of 24 at a Vibe magazine after-party outside L.A.'s Peterson Automotive Museum in March, 1997. Eight years later, no one has been charged in the murder. Coker, a former writer at Vibe magazine and The New York Times, was the last person to interview the rapper before his murder.

Igor: Unholy Frijoles

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Steve Buscemi, John Cleese and Jay Leno have joined the cast of Exodus Film Group's computer-animated short film Igor: Unholy Frijoles. The actors also are in discussions to voice roles in Igor, Exodus' upcoming feature-length computer-animated film.

Igor: Unholy Frijoles is the prequel to Igor, an animated comedy revolving around mad scientists and monsters due out in 2007. Christian Slater will give voice to Igor, a mad scientist's hunchbacked lab assistant who dreams of winning the coveted first-place award at the annual Evil Science Fair and becoming a mad scientist in his own right.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Andy Serkis, the man who provided the movement to Gollum in The Lord of the Rings, and Stephen Fry have joined the cast of Stormbreaker, the producers said Monday.

Directed by Geoffrey Sax from a screenplay by Anthony Horowitz and based on the first of Horowitz's series of novels about a reluctant teenage spy, the cast also includes Sarah Bolger, Damian Lewis, Ewan McGregor, Bill Nighy, Sophie Okonedo, Missi Pyle, Alicia Silverstone and Ashley Walters.

Serkis will play Mr. Grin, the unfortunately disfigured henchman of megalomaniac villain Darrius Sayle, played by Mickey Rourke, and Fry will appear as Smithers, the secret creator and provider of exotic gadgetry to the spies of MI6.

Jon Avnet will direct Al Pacino in 88 Minutes, a co-production of Millennium Films and Emmett/Furla Films. Variety says the drama is set for an October 15 start in Vancouver.

Written by Gary Thompson (The Fast and the Furious, NBC's Las Vegas), 88 Minutes centers on a college professor who moonlights as a forensic psychiatrist for the FBI. The professor must use his sleuthing skills to save his hide after he's told that he'll be killed in 88 minutes.

Avnet previously directed Fried Green Tomatoes and his most recent feature was 1997's Red Corner.

The Smurfs

Paramount Pictures has acquired film rights to cartoon characters The Smurfs and set up development of a 3-D CG feature with producer Jordan Kerner and Nickelodeon Movies, reports Variety.

Producers have conceived the project as a trilogy and are aiming to release the first film in 2008 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of The Smurfs.

The studio has hired Herb Ratner to script. He recently wrote Mr. Lucky for Revolution and co-wrote Focus' Clean Break with Trevor Sands.

The Smurfs originated in 1958 as a Belgian comic strip from Peyo (Pierre) Culliford. NBC launched The Smurfs in 1981, spawning 256 episodes and multiple Emmy awards.

GM! I'm late so I'll start off with a scarey post. Click this pic to see the new trailer for the remake of John Carpentar's The Fog. By the way , I like the shit out of the original....scarey as hell!

In this horror-thriller there really is something out there in the dark. One hundred years ago, in a thick, eerie fog off the rocky coast of Northern California, a horrible shipwreck occured under mysterious circumstances. Misssion: Impossible 3 (update)

Here's a little more information on the latest sequel to the Mission Impossible series:

Variety says Paramount Pictures will film Mission: Impossible 3, directed by J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias) and starring Tom Cruise, in Shanghai for up to a month in November. The film's climactic final scenes will apparently be shot in the cultural capital of China.

The trade says the country will also be used for a fair proportion of the pre-production work, some plate shots and other second unit work.

The $150 million sequel, also starring Ving Rhames, Laurence Fishburne, Keri Russell, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Michelle Monaghan, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Maggie Q, will be released on May 5, 2006.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Yes they are back and the Weinsteins are bringing them to us!

The Weinstein Co. has teamed with Warner Bros. to distribute the first all-CG-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, reports Variety.

The untitled film, set for release in early 2007, would return the franchise to the bigscreen for the first time since 1993. It continues the "Turtles" revival that began three years ago with the premiere of a new TV series.

"Reintroducing the Ninja Turtles in an animated movie will enable the filmmakers to fully realize the adventure and humor of the property," Weinstein said.

The trade says the CG-animated movie will be grittier than its predecessors, taking its tone directly from the comic book series. It will be aimed at PG auditions.

Animation veteran Kevin Munroe will write and direct. Munroe is developing the screenplay in consultation with "Turtles" comic book co-creator Peter Laird.

Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock (extra)

Brett Ratner ("Rush Hour" films, Money Talks) is set to direct an untitled heist drama being planned as a screen vehicle for Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock. Screenwriters Adam Cooper and Bill Collage are negotiating to write the screenplay for Imagine Entertainment. Brian Grazer will produce the Universal release.

The comedy is about a couple of blue-collar guys who aspire to pull off the perfect heist. Murphy came up with the idea and expressed a desire to work with Rock, who is coming off The Longest Yard and voicing Madagascar.

Cooper and Collage will write the film while Ratner directs X-Men 3 for 20th Century Fox.

X-Men 3 (update)

Ben Foster (Six Feet Under) will play the mutant Archangel (aka Angel) in 20th Century Fox's X-Men 3, reports Variety.

In the comics, carefree millionaire Warren Worthington III was the high-flying, heroic Angel. But Warren's world came crashing down when dark forces conspired to clip his wings. Recovered from his brush with evil, Archangel again soars the skies alongside the uncanny X-Men.

The actor joins fellow "X-Men" newcomers Kelsey Grammer and Vinnie Jones in the second sequel, which reteams Hugh Jackman, Famke Janssen and Ian McKellen. Brett Ratner is directing the third installment, scheduled to hit theaters on May 26, 2006.

Foster's recent films include Hostage and The Punisher.

The Fountain (extra)

Here's a comic.com look at this very unusual movie. I have heard much buzz about it! This will also poof! in a day or two lol:

Today Movieweb sat in at a roundtable for The Fountain. This is new film by maverick/auteur Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem For A Dream). Attending the roundtable was Aronofsky and one of the film’s stars, Rachel Weisz. During this discussion these two showed an unbridled enthusiasm for a project that seemed to resonate very deeply for the both of them.

The Fountain is an odyssey about one man’s thousand-year struggle to save the woman he loves. His epic journey begins in 16th century Spain where conquistador Tomas Creo (Hugh Jackman) commences his search for the Tree of Life, the legendary entity believed to grant eternal life to those who drink of it’s sap. As a modern-day scientist Tommy Creo, he desperately struggles to find a cure for the cancer that is killing his beloved wife Isabel (Rachel Weisz). Travelling through deep space as a 26th century astronaut, Tom Begins to grasp the mysteries of life that have consumed him for more then a century.

“Warner Bros. was very supportive.” Aronosksy stated, answering questions about how the studio reacted when presented with the idea for backing such an ambitious project. He then went on to say that he gave them “so much persistence they wore them down.” Dealing with a film that has multiple timelines (also in different times totaling up to 2000 years), he explained “emotionally it’s linear” and that it’s “told in a Pulp Fiction kind of way.” Aronofsky then informed us that they went through “15 official drafts” of the screenplay but that “that’s all part of the process. You go too far and then you come back.” In response to questions about the type of production The Fountain was, he described it as a “$35 million dollar guerilla movie.” In regards to the FX in the film (and the effect it has on an actor’s performance), Rachel Weisz went on to say that “the green screen is the green screen” and “how much time is spent in post is irrelevant as an actor.”

Aronofsky says that for how it looks, The Fountain “should be a $90 million” dollar movie. Due to the elongated preproduction of the film they were able to work out a lot of logistical problems and bring the film in for a much lesser amount. As far as the casting of his leading man, “Hugh Jackman really wasn’t on my radar...” then Aronofsky managed to catch him in a Broadway play “and he really went for it.” They met backstage and after talking for a while Aronofsky asked Jackman “What do you want to do next? He said I want to do an ‘Aronofsky film’ and I was like ‘Okay, prove it’.” In order to get Jackman they had to wait another 8 months.

Lastly, Weisz stated that The Fountain is “all about love”. “It’ll make sense when you see it,” Aronofsky explains, “ the film is about rebirth. It was too out there of a project to happen right away.”

Underworld: Evolution (extra)

Today Movieweb had the pleasure of sitting in on a roundtable discussion with Scott Speedman, Kate Beckinsale, Director Len Wiseman and creature creator Patrick Tatopoulos for the forthcoming sequel, Underworld: Evolution. This film follows the very well received Underworld.

The sequel to the $100 million worldwide hit, Underworld: Evolution continues the saga of war between the aristocratic Death Dealers and the barbaric Lycans (werewolves). The film traces the beginnings of the ancient feud between the two tribes as Selene (Kate Beckinsale), the beautiful vampire heroine, and Michael (Scott Speedman), the lycan hybrid, try to unlock the secrets of their bloodlines. The fast-paced, modern-day tale of deadly action, ruthless intrigue and forbidden love takes them into the battle to end all wars as the immortals must finally face their retribution.

The first of the two discussions began with Scott Speedman and Kate Beckinsale. It is apparent that these two actors take their roles of Selene and Michael very seriously, but they also seem to have had a great time on the set and formed a bond through working together.The interview opened with Speedman being asked what he had going on as far as movie roles were concerned. He candidly admitted that he didn’t have much happening in that department, simply because he’s not being offered “the kind of roles” he wants. Beckinsale then said that this new film “immediately” picks up where the other one left off. Both actors also did a lot of their own stunts and Beckinsale stated that for the most part, Director Len Wiseman (and also Beckinsale’s husband), wants them to do as many of their own stunts as possible.

The biggest difference with this film, Beckinsale noted with a smile, was that Wiseman “was in my room more.” Due to this, she had a more intimate relationship with the film in as far as how it is being edited. Beckinsale also informed us that she wears the same outfit that she wore in the last film, while Speedman joked that he got to wear “different pants.” As far as new enemies being introduced in this film, Beckinsale said they “have trouble from another hybrid this time.”

When asked about the prospects of doing Underworld 3 both actors seemed very open to the possibility with Beckinsale stating, “I think there could be... definitely by the end of this movie there’s another twist” which could lead into another film. They also both expressed a great deal of reverence for being able to work with Bill Nighy. “I loved it.” Speedman stated. They also described the training for this second film as “more intense.”

Lastly, Speedman was asked if he would ever consider playing a comic book character like Captain America and Beckinsale was hypothetically offered the role of Wonder Woman. “No.” Speedman stated matter-of-factly while Beckinsale would only offer, “I was Wonder Woman last Halloween.”

After that, Len Wiseman and Patrick Tatopoulos sat down and answered some questions about Underworld: Evolution. Wiseman stated that while he and Beckinsale are husband and wife, this actually helps when he directs her. “She’s very good about saying what she likes and doesn’t like.” Also, he can communicate his ideas easier to her because he can “cut through everything... you’re not walking on eggshells.” When asked if the success of the first film brought about any big changes with the making of the sequel, he stated that “having a crew that really knew what to do” was the biggest change. Not wanting to insult the crew from the first film, he stated that “the process” of getting the first movie made was a “struggle.” He was shooting in Budapest, Hungary with a crew that was very new to the filmmaking process. As a result, he said he had to “wear many hats” in order to pull of making the original Underworld.

Getting Patrick Tatopoulos to be the creature designer was a case of Wiseman basically telling him, “you have to do this movie!”. Tatopoulos stated that he feels Underworld: Evolution “is very much a period piece”, and that on this film there were “new werewolves and vampires... it was great fun for me.” When asked about the new hybrid that Beckinsale had alluded to during her roundtable discussion, Wiseman stated that it was “above and beyond Scott himself” in terms of the powers it has.

Lastly, when asked about the prospect of a third Underworld film, Wiseman stated, that he’s “undecided on whether that would be a full prequel or a third film that would just progress.” He then went on to state that “I am just a geek with the whole internet scene...” and that he pays attention “to what the fans like or don’t like.” He went on to say that as far as having certain elements in his films, when he reads enough about a certain thing on a message board he might say “I wasn’t planning on it, but if you guys are really interested, I’ll do that.” When asked if his wife could play Wonder Woman he grinned and said, “I think she’d be great.”

Underworld: Evolution opens in theaters nationwide on January 20th, 2006 through Screen Gems.

Walt Disney Pictures may have given a first look at a picture of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest villain Davey Jones at the San Diego Comic-Con. The studio handed out the following poster, which may show the character played by Bill Nighy in the first of two upcoming sequels.

In the follow-up, due out July 7, 2006, Captain Jack (Johnny Depp) owes a blood debt to the legendary Davey Jones, ruler of the ocean depths and captain of the ghostly Flying Dutchman. If Jack can't figure a crafty way out of this one, he'll be cursed to an afterlife of eternal servitude and damnation.

Bill Nighy previously stated that Jones is the villain and that the character will be created using special effects. "I am a very, very, very, very bad man and I am there to make people suffer in all new ways, in ways that you won't have seen before," he said. "I have a boat and I have a crew, and they are really evil buggers. I'm so computer generated that you might have trouble spotting me. You'll know it's me, but you might have to check the credits afterwards," he laughed.

ComingSoon.net attended the panel discussing the live action version of Will Eisner's The Spirit comic book at Comic-Con 2005. Since they are only in the early stages of pre-production, they didn't have a lot of news about it. There's no director, star, or production designer yet.

Producer Michael Uslan, the producer of Batman and Batman Begins, stated that he was sought out by Eisner, who passed away on January 3rd, to produce the film a number of years ago. Uslan said that he intends to do it "the right way", as comic book geeks like to say. He added that Eisner told them he wanted a "Spirit" movie that emphasized the adventurous, film noir, Hitchcock-ian "Spirit" rather than the humorous aspects of the character. He wanted him portrayed as a real guy in a real city, not a superhero that saves the world. Uslan made a point to say that Eisner always strived to make the character contemporary as he wrote it in the 40's, 50's, and 60's. Uslan gave the impression that they'd try to make The Spirit a contemporary character in 2006.

Producer Deborah Del Prete emphasized that the look was important. Sin City was mentioned over and over as an example of a film they wanted to emulate as far as nailing the look and style of the original source material. Del Prete, who happens to be a big comic and Superboy fan, also produced Green Street Hooligans starring Elijah Wood.

Comics writer and Smallville writer Jeph Loeb said The Spirit was one of the first comics he was ever hooked on and that he pushed to get the chance to write the film.

The Spirit is a masked detective, believed dead, who fights the criminals of Central City from his cemetary base. Eisner's character appeared in comic strip and comic book form for decades, which have been collected and reprinted in hardcover form by DC Comics in recent years.

Night Skies

Producer Mike Greene, director Roy Knyrim and the SOTA FX/Toys team brought the recently wrapped alien abduction thriller Night Skies to San Diego Comic-Con this week. The movie is a based on a true story of one man's account of the March 13, 1997 Phoenix Lights encounter - a well-documented and widespread UFO sighting. The group showed attendees a behind-the-scenes trailer filmed during shooting of the movie. The trailer centered largely on location shooting dealing with a large recreational vehicle (RV). The team also showed the official theatrical trailer, which included real footage of Senator John McCain acknowledging the Phoenix sighting.

Actors George Stults (7th Heaven), A.J. Cook (Tru Calling) and Jason Connery (Wishmaster 3) were on hand to share the experience of making the film. Stults plays Matt - the abrasive boyfriend to Cook's character Lily, who is fighting a strained relationship and has a secret she will not reveal. Connery plays Richard - a bystander who is drawn into the couple's world after a car accident.

All three were drawn to the project due to a fascination with UFOs, the element of it being a true story and the unsolved mystery aspect of the material.

The team used puppets and costumes for the aliens in the film and not CGI.

Knyrim told the crowd he was going for a The Hills Have Eyes with aliens, 1960s throwback look to the film, which is still looking for a distributor. S.B. Harris, publisher of Electronic Gaming Monthly and Jerry Macaluso, president of SOTA Toys, funded the film. The pair had been long-time friends and always wanted to work together.

"We wanted to revisit the whole 'gray alien' thing," said Macaluso. "No one had done it the way we thought it should be done."

Screenwriter Eric Miller (Dog Soldiers 2) wrote the script. Greene said they would run the film in the festival circuit and try to get the film into the Sundance Film Festival. Macaluso said he thought Night Skies could hit theaters around Halloween 2006.

The set was a reunion of sorts for three of the team - Knyrim, Cook and Connery worked together on Wishmaster 3.

Looks like a cheapo movie, but still might be fun!

Invasion of The Body Snatchers

GM! We'll start off this morning with an oldy but goody remake! German director Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall) will direct an Invasion of the Body Snatchers remake for Warner Bros., reports Production Weekly.

Written by Dave Kajganich, the new version centers on a female protagonist who uncovers a conspiracy in a small town where the inhabitants' personalities seem to be changing.

In Don Siegel's original 1956 sci-fi/horror film, a hysteria spreads through a small California town after townspeople appear to their relatives and friends as strangers while retaining their outward appearances.

The studio owns the remake rights to the film after making 1993's Body Snatchers, directed by Abel Ferrara. Production on the new version will start this October in Baltimore.

According to Variety, Ringers: Lord of the Fans writer-helmer Carlene Cordova's docu tracking the cultural influence of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" fantasy books, has been acquired by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

The picture, narrated by Lord of the Rings hobbit Dominic Monaghan -- was produced through the Planet BB label in association with "Rings" fansite TheOneRing.net.

The Pilot

According to Variety, Paramount has decided to fly with The Pilot, paying mid-six against high-six figures to snap up Johnny Rosenthal's comedy pitch about a pilot-turned-steward.

Paramount, which outbid several studios in an auction conducted by Paradigm, has set up The Pilot with Foursight Entertainment partners Jeremy Bell, George Heller and Michael Lasker. The trio, who manage Rosenthal, will exec produce while Par's Dan Levine will oversee for the studio.

Rosenthal's story, set in 1983, centers on a misogynistic pilot who's brought up on sexual harassment charges and forced to become a cabin steward in order to learn gender sensitivity.

Parasyte

According to Variety, New Line has attached Takashi Shimizu, director of Japan's boffo horror pic Ju-On and its English-language remake The Grudge, to helm Parasyte. Shimizu will also supervise the script's development.

Parasyte is based on a 12-part Manga comicbook series by Hitosi Iwaaki that's published in English by the TokyoPop imprint. Current screenplay is by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi (Par's Aeon Flux) penned the screenplay, which has been rewritten by Matt Drake.

In the sci-fier, alien spores land on Earth and start taking over human bodies. One young man manages to isolate his "parasyste" in his left arm. Left part human and part alien, the young man and "Lefty" -- an alien arm with a will of its own -- are the planet's sole protection from the sinister invasion.

Producing the pic are Don Murphy of Angyfilms and Lisa Henson and Kristine Belson of Henson Pictures, along with Japanese producer (and Shimizu partner) Taka Ichise.

By combining live action and CGI in Parayste, the filmmakers will aim to create a realistic alien landscape on Earth.

Shimizu's dance card has him slated to do a sequel to Col's The Grudge 2 before seguing into "Parasyte."

A Scanner Darkly (update)

Set in a future world where America has lost the war on drugs, undercover cop Fred (Reeves) is one of many agents hooked on the popular drug Substance D, which causes its users to develop split personalities. Fred, for instance, is also Bob, a notorious drug dealer. Along with his superior officers, Fred sets up an elaborate scheme to catch Bob and tear down his operation. Based on the Philip K. Dick novel.

Recently Movieweb had a chance to attend a Q&A with the producer Tommy Pallotta and the animators of Richard Linklaters upcoming adaptation of Phillip K. Dick’s A Scanner Darkly. Sadly, due to the parking situation and the overall enormity of Comic-Con, we arrived a bit late to this discussion and weren’t able to get the names of all the participants. Still, it was easy to see from all the answers that were given that this project was something very close to all involved with this interesting film.

According to Pallotta, A Scanner Darkly was made for a budget of “$8 million dollars”. At first they ran up against some opposition from the films backers because they didn’t see any market for an “R rated animated film”. They also spoke of this movie as being “a sci-fi action film without sci-fi or action” really being prominent in the story. The animators then talked about the actual nuts and bolts of making the movie. It was originally shot with real actors and then that footage was “animated over” using software developed specifically for this process (it is the same software used in Linklater’s 2001 film Waking Life). They went on to say that every aspect of how it was shot was “all for animation”, from the lighting to the camera moves. This brought up some questions about who was the easiest actor to animate? Would Keanu Reeves get an Oscar for his role? And the vagaries of animating Keanu’s facial hair. Pallotta and all the animators said that so far they are very happy with the way that Warner Independent Pictures has been marketing the film. They also spoke of others like Terry Gilliam who had been circling the project before them, in regards to the road of how this movie eventually led to Linklater.

At this point I realized that the person sitting on the far right of the stage was actual not a person at all but a robot version of Phillip K. Dick. Having come in late to this Q&A, I probably wouldn’t have been so confused by this. Other then the fact that it was missing the back part of it’s head, the robot version of Mr. Dick looked incredibly real. At this point people were able to ask the robot questions. While this was a bit spotty at first, Phillip K. Dick the robot eventually let loose a long answer about the film version of A Scanner Darkly. This response was punctuated by it asking the audience, “What is your favorite movie?”

The Q&A concluded with a screening of the movie’s trailer.

A Scanner Darkly opens in theaters in March 2006 and is being released by Warner Independent Pictures.

Eragon (update)

This movie looks like it is on the fast track....I guess they see another Lord of the Rings for next summer.....I don't think so! According to Variety, Looking to ride a fire-breathing dragon into next summer, 20th Century Fox has set an Aug. 1 start date and a June 16 release date for Eragon, a Fox 2000 Pictures adaptation of the bestselling Christopher Paolini novel.

Visual effects wiz Stefen Fangmeier has been set to make his feature directorial debut, and Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich and Djimon Hounsou will star.

Newcomer Ed Speleers has been chosen to play the title character, a teen farmboy whose discovery of a dinosaur egg in his homeland of Alagaesia leads him on a predestined journey to become a Dragon Rider who will battle an evil king to determine the fate of his world.

Peter Buchman adapted the script, which has been rewritten by Larry Konner and Mark Rosenthal. John Davis and Wyck Godfrey are producing for Davis Entertainment. Pic will be shot in Budapest and the mountains of Slovakia.

Studio is planning its trilogy around a series of novels still being written. Author Paolini is now 21, but he wasn't old enough to drive a car when he began Eragon. Published by Alfred A. Knopf in 2003, Eragon topped young-adult bestseller lists for almost a year, and it has 2 million copies in print in 37 countries. Sequel "Elder" will have a 1 million copy first printing in August.

Working at Industrial Light & Magic for 15 years, Fangmeier was visual effects supervisor on "Lemony Snicket," The Bourne Identity, Saving Private Ryan, and The Perfect Storm. His visual effects supervision on the Fox pic Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World sparked studio brass to his directing potential.

Fangmeier said it wasn't the f/x opportunities that hooked him on Eragon. "I loved the core coming-of-age story about a young man rising to meet his destiny," Fangmeier said. "While I had to convince the executives of my take on the film, I felt like there was destiny in this project for me as well."

ILM's George Lucas said: "Stefen invested a good part of his life into creating state-of-the-art visual effects at ILM. His effects work always supported story and characters, and that will serve him very well on 'Eragon.' "

Eragon hits theaters on June 16th, 2006.

Clive Barker Films

I like some of Clive Barker's books and movies so I naturally jumped on this story: Novelist Clive Barker - in concert with toy maker Art Asylum - brought a new plush toy line to show off at this week's San Diego Comic-Con. The toys, dubbed Jump Tribe, are due to hit shelves later this year and will be packaged with original stories about the individual creatures written by Barker. While at the Con, Barker - who became an American citizen two weeks ago - shared some information about a few horror film projects he is working on.

The first - Midnight Meat Train - is being directed by Patrick Tatopoulous (Independence Day) - which is being filmed partly in New York. The film revolves around a photographer's search for a subway serial killer.

Another smaller film, called The Plague, is being filmed in Winnepeg. The film centers around a group of teens that emerge from mysterious comas and turn on their parents.

"I hate PG-13 horror movies," Barker proclaimed slamming his fist into the table. "Give me back my puking children!"

Barker also is in the process of writing a new book - "The Scarlet Gospels" - a 500-page tome about 'a man with pins in his head,' according to the author. The book is a collection of erotic text and illustrations.

Doris and Bernard

GM! Let's start out with this small independent movie: Susan Sarandon and Ralph Fiennes are in final talks to star in Bob Balaban's Doris and Bernard from New York's Trigger Street Independent and U.K.-based Little Bird Productions.

Variety says the independent film tells the story of tobacco billionairness Doris Duke and her butler. It will focus on the latter part of Duke's life and her relationship with her gay Irish butler, Bernard Lafferty, to whom she left her entire fortune.

The script was written by Hugh Costello, with filming set to begin in New York in October.

The Road Back

Chris Cooper is starring in The Road Back by writer Matthew McDuffie for Fortress Entertainment, says Variety.

20th Century Fox has bought screen rights to writer Shan Salerno's Reckless, reports Variety. The sexual thriller centers on a 30-ish married couple who start playing a dangerous game in an effort to spice up their flagging marriage.

Salerno is polishing the thriller, for which casting will start soon. Salerno handled all of the pre-production and production rewriting for Fox's Alien vs. Predator.

He also co-wrote Sony's Ghost Rider, starring Nicolas Cage. Jan De Bont has signed on to direct Salerno's adaptation of shark thriller MEG, for New Line, based on the bestselling series of books by Steve Alten.

Ex Machina

New Line Cinema has picked up the rights to the critically acclaimed comic book Ex Machina by creators Brian
Vaughan and Tony Harris, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Set in our modern-day real world, Ex Machina tells the story of civil engineer and lifelong comics fan Mitchell Hundred, who becomes America's first living, breathing superhero after a strange accident gives him amazing powers. Eventually tiring of risking his life merely to help maintain the status quo, Mitchell retires from masked crimefighting and runs for Mayor of New York City, winning by a landslide.

Set days after Mayor Hundred's inauguration, the comic reveals the origin of the Mayor's super-heroic alter ego, as well as the shocking event that inspired him to put on his jetpack one last time. What dark secret is Mitchell Hundred hiding, and how far are his political opponents willing to go to expose it?

Two versions of the script are being prepared, the trade says. As part of the deal, Vaughan is writing one version, while Glen Brunswick, co-creator of comic book "The Gray Area" with famed artist John Romita Jr., will write an adaptation as well. Brunswick also is attached in a production capacity.

Vaughn previously set up Y The Last Man, created with artist Pia Guerra, at New Line with David Goyer producing.

Bran Mak Morn

GM! I'm back! Let's get started because there is lots of movie news this morning. I'll try to catch it up over the next few days.

Variety says that Universal Pictures has set Peter Berg to direct Bran Mak Morn, an adaptation of the Robert E. Howard multinovel fantasy series that Working Title Films partners Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan are mounting as an epic. John Romano is writing the script.

Howard is the creator of fantasy novels and comics that include Conan the Barbarian and King Kull. Bran Mak Morn mixes the historical with the fantastical as the title character, a mythical king of ancient Britain, forges an alliance with supernatural troops to contest the unstoppable forces of the Roman Empire.

Romano most recently wrote an adaptation of the Philip Roth novel "American Pastoral," which will be directed by Phil Noyce. Romano will write and Berg will direct the Michael Mann-produced The Kingdom at Universal.

Berg hopes to make Bran Mak Morn his follow-up. The film is the first fantasy foray for Berg, who last directed Friday Night Lights.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

He's got a cushy job stamping invoices at an electronics superstore, a nice apartment with a proud collection of action figures and comic books, good friends, a nice attitude. But there's just one little thing he hasn't quite gotten around to doing yet--something most people have done by his age. Done a lot. Andy's never, ever, ever had sex--not even by accident. So is that such a big deal?

Well, for Andy's buds at the store, it sure is. Although they think he's a bit of an oddball, there's certainly a planetful of stranger (and homelier) guys who've at least had one go at having a go. The Story: Set in the Philippines in 1945, "Ghost Soldiers" tells the true story of the 6th Ranger Battalion, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Henry Mucci (Bratt) who undertake a daring rescue mission against all odds. Traveling thirty miles behind enemy lines, the 6th Ranger Battalion aims to liberate over 500 American prisoners-of-war from the notorious Cabanatuan Japanese POW camp in the most audacious rescue ever.

This also looks like a film I'd like to see.

GM! I'm up early because I have found out at the last moment I have to go out of town for a few days so these posts will have to hold you for a bit. It is the usual slow movie day today so I will do a couple of coming movie profiles for you.

Written and directed by Michael Winterbottom it stars: Kieran O'Brien, Margot Stilley, The Dandy Warhols, Franz Ferdinand, Bobby Gillespie, Bob Hardy, Alex Kapranos, Mani, Nick McCarthy, Michael Nyman, Courtney Taylor-Taylor, and Robert Young.

The Story: "9 Songs" is a cinema-verite love story, a tale of two lovers who go to indie rock concerts and well... have a lot of kinky sex. Cut together with actual concert footage and real sex melded together as the memories of the protagonist, while he flies over the Arctic on an expedition. The Bands: Franz Ferdinand, The Von Bondies, The Dandy Warhols, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Elbow, Super Furry Animals and more.

Now this film looks interesting. Sex , rock music with an original idea.....I like it! I will keep an eye out for more information abou this movie. How abou those posters.

The Story: Possibly the most brutal film ever made, "Chaos" is a cautionary tale of two teens who throw themselves into harms way. Two girls, looking to score some ecstasy at a rave, follow a young man to a house where terror awaits. There a gang of felons capture and torment the girls drawing them into a nightmare of violence.

This movie is the lowest kind of exploitation and appeals to darkest side of humankind....With that said.....Enjoy! lol.

Things we lost in the Fire

According to Variety, DreamWorks has swooped in and purchased the spec script Things We Lost in the Fire by Allan Loeb for Sam Mendes to produce.

The spec went out over the July Fourth weekend and caused a stir, but the deal was sealed -- in large part due to the appeal of Mendes, who has a production shingle at DreamWorks -- before most of the majors could get in on the bidding.

The story follows a woman whose husband dies suddenly, leaving her alone with two children; she invites her husband's troubled best friend to live with them. As the friend turns his life around, he helps the fractured family confront the emotional void left by the loss.

Mendes recently wrapped the Gulf War pic Jarhead, which Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher are producing for Universal. He's also exec producing DreamWorks' The Kite Runner, based on the novel by Khaled Hosseini.
